Last night I was updating my 2010 planner with info from the school calendar and I noticed that next week is the Junior ring ceremony (yes, I realize it’s not 2010 but I just noticed it okay!!). I was wondering what exactly that was so I emailed a friend. Turns out that the school rings are ordered at the end of the sophomore year, then presented to the girls in the junior year at a big mass where the rings are blessed by the bishop and everything. Apparently their parents are invited and invitations like the first communion invitations are sent out and it is a really big deal. I remember when I was in Girl Scouts, our troop was based at a Catholic Church and they did something similar with our Girl Scout pins. We had to go to a mass and the priest blessed them and we each got pinned by our parents. It was quite nice but I was 7 and easily impressed.
After thinking about this ring ceremony I decided what a great idea it is. In my high school, and the public ones I’m familar with here, the rings are ordered in the junior year. They get them in the senior year and only wear them for a short time. These rings are not cheap and you wear them for such a short time By getting them in the junior year these girls will be able to wear them for a year and half. Nice.
